The Hole stone ( Holestone ) in Antrim County, Ireland shows the stars of Sagittarius at its base and the stars of Aquila above those. The stars of Sagittarius are marked by carved figures and holes for stars. An ape's head in relief represents the front stars of Sagittarius while the back stars are marked by a squirrel. Aquila is marked, as might be expected, by a bird. Above Aquila at the top of th megalith is a bird's head, marking Cygnus. The entire megalith also represents a large head with a conical type of hat. The Hole Stone sits on a large crag which is much larger than the megalith itself. There are clearly figures carved on the crag, but these are quite weathered and hard to identify. The left side is a boat with the front and back rudders clearly visible. Front rudders are seen on the boats on the Naqada II Wall Painting from Hierakonpolis in Egypt. The boat carved in the crag represents Capricorn. To the right of the crag are markings for the stars of Sagitta, Aquila and Sagittarius and perhaps far to the right Scorpio. The carved figures on the crag are difficult to identify. The end of Sagittarius to the right could be the tail of a large fish. The empty space to the left of Sagittarius with its head to the left of Sagitta could be a sting ray, similar to the fish seen for this region of the sky in Wales. The carved crag appears to be older than the hole stone in its presentation. |
