The sites of Tireighter and Tirnony in Derry County, Ireland mark Sagittarius. The site of Tireighter has a separate megalith for each major star of Sagittarius, very similar to the megalithic representation of Sagittarius in Wales at the cairn of Trefignath and the megaliths of that cairn. Compare Trefignath The major carved figures at Tireighter show a shark in the middle with the star xi2 as the fin, along with a turtle and eels and a dolphin. One of the megaliths appears to have a group of seals pictured. Several megaliths are marked with human faces. The Tirnony Dolmen near Maghera also represents Sagittarius, additionally showing the surrounding stellar constellations of Corona Australis, Indus, Telescopium, Pavo and Ara. Unique at Tirnony is the shape of the capstone in the form a woman's head with her hair tied in a bun. The number of megaliths beneath the capstone, - not all used to support the capstone - would seem to represent the brightest stars of Sagittarius. |
