The site Barnmeen in County Down, Ireland marks Capricorn and Aquarius in the ancient geodetic astronomical system of ancient Ireland. Capricorn is shown here as a boat with Aquarius marking the sail. The star Deneb Algiedi marks the Winter Solstice ca. 3000 BC according to the Heifetz Historical Planisphere. Additionally, the megalith shows various carved figures which are difficult to identify with stars due to the lack of sufficient cupmarks. Provisionally, the figures seem to represent a shipwreck, with the bobbing head of man and goat (but perhaps this is a human head) in the water, together with a sea serpent (or leg, perhaps marking Indus) and turtle (perhaps marking alpha-Pavo). The reverse side of the stone shows an elephant's head (this would be Leo on the other side of the heavens). Each stone in entirety also forms a human head, each in profile in the above perspectives. What is marked as a "bird tail" in the drawing above also forms the legs of the man in the picture. Positionally, there may be a relation to the rebirth of the solar year, especially since several figures appear to be rabbits or hares. Hence, an act of human regeneration may in fact be intended. The right side of Capricorn is elsewhere marked megalithically as a hare - see e.g. Kents Cavern in England and look at the "rabbit nose" above. Barnmeen is a gigantic megalith (twice the heighth of a grown man) carved in granite, so its sheer size and the durability of the chosen stone indicate it was very important. In Gaelic meann means "young kid, newling" which is surely the origin of the term MEEN in BARN-MEEN. Compare Pharaonic MIN. Barn may be "born" or Gaelic "bearn" meaning "notch, gap", i.e. the gap of or notch for the New Year. There may also be an ancient connection old Assyrian MUNA-cha "goat- fish" as applied to Capricorn. Interesting also is that the top of the stone is formed as the head of a whale and that the hard granite has been sculpted so that the entire stone fits the shape of Capricorn at the top. |
