The megalithic site of Ballynacloghy in County Galway, Ireland represents Hydra and Leo whereas the much younger stone of Turoe (ca. 1 BC) represents already a fairly modern version of Hydra, with the major stars shown as circles or circular whorls. One sees the Turoe stone clearly when it is folded out into four parts as at Turoe Design using an idea from Peter Harbison's book, Pre-Christian Ireland, published by Thames and Hudson Ltd., London, 1988, p. 159. If you make the circles dark in color, one gets the same Hydra picture as above. The much older sister site in County Galway, about 3000 years older, is Ballynacloghy. Ballynacloghy is interesting for a number of reasons. Ballynacloghy is remarkable in that mainstream "observers" think the capstone has fallen, but if you view the drawing carefully, you will see this is impossible, since the right flanking stone is so large that the capstone would have been at an impossibly high angle. In fact, the megalith makers intended the site to look exactly as it does, with the angled capstone representing the break in Hydra at Alphard, and Leo, as a separate megalith, peering correctly from the background through that break. This makes it quite a unique megalithic site. |
