LONGFORD COUNTY
AUGHNACLIFFE URSA MINOR

Aughnacliffe

Only megaliths.co.uk megaliths.net and megaliths.de
are original megalithic decipherment sites.

Aughnacliffe in County Longford, Ireland
represents Ursa Minor as a
hammer-headed type of axe.

That AUGH-NA meant "axe" is supported by
MacBain's
An Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language
(Scottish Gaelic)
where reference is made to Scottish Gaelic EIGH "file",
and Irish OIGHE, seen as the roots of English AG "axe".

See MacBain's Dictionary
where it is written:
"eigh a file, Irish oighe: *agiâ; root ag of English axe, Gothic aqizi"

we might add the perhaps older Indo-Europan root as e.g. Latvian ASS "sharp"

The cliffe in Aughnacliffe may be
"clip a hook, clip, Irish clipe, a gaff; from the English clip. See cleibe"

i.e. by logic, a hooked axe, a crooked axe, a "cliffed" axe, as Ursa Minor is.
